Mr. Mayor

Ted Danson has just finished The Good Place and already has found a new prime time show.  He stars with Holly Hunter and Bobby Moynihan in this comedic look at politics in Los Angeles.  This show is basically an L.A. version of the Michael J. Fox show Spin City.  I liked that show and I like this show, however it is not reinventing anything or breaking a barriers.

The Great North

A woodsy Alaskan family with a fishing operation plunder through the struggles of life after the matriarch passes away.  It really doesn’t sound like a comedy but in every essence it is. Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, and Will Forte bring this animated series to life.  I fear that this show will continue to place Offerman in a stereotypical manly man role, but I do love him in this genre.  I really have not been able to get into many of these adult centric cartoons lately, however this one is unique and hits the notes that make me tingle with delight.

What I Have Been Watching – February 2021

Here are the shows I have been watching in February 2021, these may not be new shows, but they are what I’ve been watching.  My goal is create reviews for all of these on the site and go back to what I have watched in the past and review also. The shows that are reviewed will have links to their post and I plan to update this page as I go.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist

I love musicals.  For a large portion of my life that is all I was about.  I loved TV shows like Cop Rock, Glee, and the occasional musical episode from regular shows like Buffy or even Grey’s Anatomy.  What I didn’t like about them is the lack of reasoning for spontaneous singing and dancing.  This show solves this problem. Zoey has a brain defect that sees everyone’s emotions through them performing extraordinary show stopping numbers.  Everyone in the show is great at singing and the numbers are great and the lead Jane Levy is fantastic. My favorite part of the show though is the inclusion and celebration of the LBGTQA community.

Below Deck

I recently discovered this show, as I am not one for reality shows, this show somehow tripped my trigger. Captain Lee and his gang set sail with the richest of rich and you are not following the hoity toity you are following those that serve them.  from stewardesses to deckhands to the captain you learn how they earn 1500 to 2200 dollar tips for a three day charter.  You also follow their love lives on the boat as well as their work habits.  I like this show for what it is, but it is definitely a guilty pleasure.

All Rise

All Rise it what is said when a judge enters the courtroom.  This is also said when a bride enters the church and walks down the aisle to start her new life.  This show is about a judge who is starting a new life.  She is newly appointed to the bench after years of being a prosecutor and she is also a maverick trying to widdle away at the inconstancies in the law.  The show is acted well and tackles some tough subjects.

The Neighborhood

I wonder how the pitch meeting went for this show?  White guy moves in to a black neighborhood.  In this time of racial awareness how could this even be considered?  The stars of the show have clout so perhaps they were able to get the show past the initial pitch. Actually it is a good show.  It is a sappy sitcom and not really trying to say anything racially or if it is it is very little.  I think though it could if they wanted to but I am sure they would lose a major portion of their audience.  I like the show and it has a few good laughs.  But because of its potential and what it actually pulls off I give it a lower score.

A Discovery of Witches

I am a fan of fantasy. Not so much elves and dwarves but more like vampires and witches. So of course when Deborah Harkness’ series of books came out I devoured them. The story is centered on a witch who has no powers and no interest in obtaining them and a vampire who falls in love with her. There is much action and suspense in the novels, but really and truly it is a love story.

The television series stays true to the books and for once I can say it may be better than the novel. Which is novel! I really love this series and hope it continues past what has been written in the novels. Now I know what a Game of Thrones fan feels like.

The Rookie

Captain Hammer has joined the police force at the age of 45.  Oh my.  This ABC show has been on a couple of seasons now and my initial review was that it was hokey and I loved it.  I still think it is a good show. Nathan Fillion, the lead actor, does a great job and is able to make you like him no matter the situation.  This past season they have tried to make the show more dramatic which is noce but I think they can go a lot farther, but perhaps the distance I want is more than network TV is allowed to go.
